What causes a hangover?

A hangover is mainly caused by dehydration but also due to poisoning of the liver and kidneys.

The main cause of a hangover is ethanol – the alcohol in your drinks. It’s a toxic chemical that works in the body as a diuretic, which means it makes you urinate more and you can become dehydrated as a result.

Consuming too much alcohol normally leaves you with a headache, diarrhea caused by poising of the liver, fatigue and nausea. All caused by dehydration and/or poisoning of the liver.

Stats show that South Africa is one of the most alcohol consuming countries per capita! You may not notice while you are young but your liver gets damaged every time you consume more than 2 alcoholic beverages!

One role of your liver is to metabolize, or break down, alcohol so that it can leave your body. But if you consume more alcohol than your liver can process, you’re harming this vital organ: Too much alcohol is toxic to your liver and can have serious consequences down the road.

A common myth is that it is purely the alcohol which leaves you feeling unwell the next day, but the reality is that it most cases you indulge in rich, oily and unhealthy food on a night out! Whilst the common myth is that oily food helps for a hangover, this is simply untrue.

Oily, rich food actually makes it harder for your body to metabolize the food and alcohol that you consume. As if your liver and other organs are not taking enough strain during drinking we also add processed foods and oil to the mix.

SOME TIPS!

  • DRINK ENOUGH WATER when taking 2moro2nite and in general on your night out. Water helps your liver to cope with the toxins, flushes your kidneys and replenishes fluids lost when urinating during your night out.
  • STAY AWAY FROM UNHEALTHY FOOD! Whilst it may taste good at the time it will leave you with some unpleasant aftereffects. Rather opt for non-greasy healthy options.
  • DON’T PASS OUT! Yep, as difficult as it might be to stay awake after your night out, try your best to stay awake for at least 60 minutes after consuming your last drink. You may think that you slept like a baby after your night out, but the truth is your brain actually only “shuts down” after your body has metabolized all of the alcohol. This means that although you think you had 8 hours of sleep it may well be (depending on how much you had) that you only had 4 hours of sleep! Ever felt well rested after a big night even with 8 hours sleep? Didn’t think so.
